Converted warehouse, family home - Brighton

My house was originally built as a warehouse in a field in about 1800. Gradually, through the 19th century, houses were built around it and it now sits in a pretty Georgian terrace in one of Brighton's most beautiful neighbourhoods, two minutes from the beach. It is now a large open-plan space with bare floorboards, white walls, books, and occasional splashes of colour in the art and furnishings. My son (now 16) was born in the nearby hospital and has grown up here. He has decorated his bedroom in his own minimalist style; mine is more cosy with its own en suite bathroom.

About the location

Brighton is sometimes known as London-By-the-Sea - it's home to many commuters (50 minutes on the train to Central London) and a large proportion of them are 'creatives' of one sort or another, escapees from the big city in search of more space and a bit of quiet. Our neighbourhood, Kemptown, is dominated by beautiful Georgian architecture, its proximity to the beach, vintage/antique markets, coffee shops and nice pubs. It's a distinct community with both families and singletons, good schools and parks nearby and is one of the most gay-friendly places in the world. I've lived here since 1988. A Londoner born and bred I didn't want to leave London at all but am so glad I did.
